A bit of our history

Dunbar Lumber Supply is your neighbourhood building materials company.

With stores located at Arbutus Street, in South Vancouver and Ladner, our materials and service have being supplying Vancouver’s contractors and homeowners for over 50 years. Our warehouse on Shaughnessy St takes care of deliveries and keeps our Arbutus store fully stocked with building materials. We carry everything from basic hardware like screws and nails to dimensional lumber and plywood. Anything we don't have we are always happy to do a special order for!


Our story began in 1972, when Sid Shivji bought the business from its former owner. Several years after taking over the business, an unfortunate fire brought the building down. Sid rebuilt the store and reopened in 1975.

The company has grown steadily with the support of the neighbourhood to what it is today, a great option for Vancouver’s and Ladner’s contractors and homeowners. When someone needs fast access to quality hardware, building materials or experienced insight to make every project more effective, Dunbar Lumber is the place to go. We've even been featured as one of the Best Home Improvement stores in Vancouver!

Our Ladner store opened in 2013 and has been a neighbourhood staple ever since. Working on a more traditional model of store and lumberyard, the new location is now a reference for Ladner’s building community as it fully meets their demands while engaging in the community by sponsoring events and fundraisers. We’re sure that it has nothing to do with having a former Stanley Cup winning NHL player on the store roster…


The store on Arbutus Street is relatively new as the move from our original location on Dunbar only happened in August 2017. The company is working on a new business model where the Shaughnessy warehouse allows the retail store to remain close to its customer base and still be able to deliver large orders to job sites around the city.


As always, we are focused on getting our customers what they need, we’ll do our best to assist them on getting their job done the best way possible.  That’s why our customers always come back, they know at Dunbar Lumber Supply we are listening to their needs and working with them to find the best solution.
